Production of the euro 100 banknotes

31 August 2000

On 11 July 2000 the ECB reported on problems concerning the quality of the EURO 100 banknotes produced by one of the printing works. The banknotes deviated slightly with regard to one feature compared with the specifications.

In the meantime a process has been developed whereby it will be possible for these EURO 100 banknotes to be made fully compliant with the quality standards required by the ECB. Owing to this process the additional costs will be minimised and the timetable for delivery of the banknotes will not be affected.

The ECB, together with the national central banks of the euro area, will continue to ensure that only euro banknotes that comply with the prescribed high quality standards will be brought into circulation.
